چکیده

Within the next few years it is envisaged that a number of computer assisted surgery products will become available. For many surgical procedures, outcome of surgery will rely on the accuracy and repeatability with which a computer assisted surgical tool performs its task. This paper presents a Computer Assisted Orthopaedic System (CAOS) which takes an image guided approach to planning and implementing a trajectory, to assist an orthopaedic surgeon. Accurate delivery of this trajectory is achieved via an intelligent guide. This paper details the design issues and identifies the registration and calibration techniques used by the CAOS intelligent guide. The paper also enumerates, and where possible quantifies, the factors that influence the accuracy performance of the system. Accuracy trees are used to show the root source of inaccuracies and how they propagate and combine in a system.

Hemophilic Pseudotumors: Diagnosis and Management

Prevention is essential for avoiding the complications of muscle hematomas (pseudotumors, compartment syndromesand peripheral nerve lesions) in hemophilic patients. This is achieved through early diagnosis of muscle hematomasand proper long-term hematological treatment until they have resolved (confirmed by image studies). Ultrasound-guidedpercutaneous drainage could be benefi...

Accuracy Validation in Image - Guided Orthopaedic Surgery

Validating the accuracy of image-guided surgical systems is a challenging and important problem which has received little attention in the literature. Potential sources of inaccuracy include: CT imaging noise, model generation errors, errors introduced by fixturing, intra-operative data noise, registration errors, and inaccuracies in surgical tools and actions. In this paper, we discuss our exp...

Robotics and computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery.

These are just a few representative applications of the synergistic use of computer and robotic technology assisting the orthopaedic surgeon. While the individual systems are certain to change over time, the basic principles of correlating radiographic and anatomic data through a registration process, and displaying additional instrument or implant information through smart tools and surgical n...

Ultrasound Measurements of the ECRB Tendon Shows Remarkable Variations in Patients with Lateral Epicondylitis

Background: Lateral epicondylitis (LE) most commonly affects the Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis (ECRB) tendon andpatients are generally treated with injection therapy. For optimal positioning of the injection, as well as an estimation ofthe surface area and content of the ECRB tendon to determine the volume of the injectable needed, it is important toknow the exact location of...

Computer Aided Orthopaedic Surgery: Incremental shift or paradigm change?

Computer Aided Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS) is now about 25 years old. Unlike Neurosurgery, Computer Aided Surgery has not become the standard of care in Orthopaedic Surgery. In this paper, we provide the technical and clinical context raised by this observation in an attempt to elucidate the reasons for this state of affairs. We start with a brief outline of the history of CAOS, review the main ...
